Get Started with DIY Flooring [VIDEO]

A little creativity and some elbow grease can give a piece of furniture a new life—and a completely new look! In this episode of DIY Friday, Jan Hagerman, New Brighton ReStore Manager, shares an amazing DIY transformation. This project was created by ReStore Associate Matt Johnson.
When the donations team at ReStore in New Brighton received a Lane cedar chest from 1959, they couldn't pass it up. Lane Company started in 1912, and the last cedar chest was made in 2001 before the company closed. The chest was well-loved, and ReStore doesn't put items in that condition directly on the sales floor. However, Matt had a vision, and this chest was saved from the dumpster. In six to eight hours, he totally transformed the piece.
Here's what Matt did for his DIY:
Removed the white laminate
Repainted the chest
Added blocks with oil for texture and color
Painted the top
Attached legs
The best part is that this chest could be yours! You can bid on this piece during our silent auction at the Hard Hat & Black Tie Gala on April 26. If you purchase tickets, it will be available to bid on in person. Or, you can bid online—stay tuned by following Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity's Facebook page. All proceeds from this event support affordable housing in the metro area through Twin Cities Habitat.
You can also bid on a DIY class with Jan. You and five friends can enjoy a personal class of your choice. If you've been wanting to learn how to embroider, paint, or more, don't miss this chance!
