Curious about installing new flooring in your home but don't know where to begin? New Brighton ReStore Manager Jan is here to help! In her latest segment on WCCO's DIY Friday, she shared tips and info to get you started. Check it out for details on variety, cost, and installation tricks.
You can find flooring at many home improvement stores, but the money you spend at ReStore goes further. Each purchase supports affordable homeownership through Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity! Here are some flooring and tile options we often have in stock at our locations in south Minneapolis and New Brighton:
Carpet tile
Hard flooring: Hardwood, engineered hardwood, laminate, vinyl
Tile and mosaic
Rugs
Hard flooring comes in many different styles, so choose based on your needs and budget. For example, engineered hardwood is more affordable than hardwood. Some styles click together like puzzles, while others need to be nailed or glued down. If you think the flooring will get wet often, opt for vinyl instead of laminate. Other varieties come with underlayment; some don't. If you're in a Homeowners Association (HOA), check to see if there are any specific rules about flooring.
What about cost? Here's an estimate of what you can expect to pay at ReStore, though prices vary:
Vinyl: $1.75 to $2 per sq. ft.
Laminate: $1 to $1.25 per sq. ft.
Hardwood: Varies by type, but usually more expensive
Ceramic tile: $1 per sq. ft.
Mosaic tile: $4 per sheet
Carpet tile: $1/ sq. ft.
Rugs: Varies by size and style
Once you have selected your flooring, it's relatively easy to put in. Most people find that click-together styles are the easiest to install. Tile takes more skill, so Jan recommends starting small or practicing on a piece of plywood. Staff at home improvement stores (including ReStore!) or YouTube are great resources for tiling tips. Carpet squares are simple to replace. Just pull a section out and add a new piece with double-sided tape if it gets dirty or damaged.
