DIY with ReStore: Reusing Old Wood Pallets [VIDEO]

Repurposing and reusing items either found in your home or at stores is a fun way to spend an autumn day being crafty with your family.

Jan Hagerman, with Twin Cities Habitat's ReStore, has some creative project ideas using wood pallets.

"We've all driven around and seen piles of pallets in industrial areas or retail places," she says. "We hate to see those wasted, and here at ReStore, we don't waste them."

Make a Compost Bin or Planter

Crafting a three-compartment compost bin allows you to rotate your compost throughout the summer. Not a composter? Use the bin as a planter for your front step, backyard deck or patio.

Create a Wine Rack

A smaller project that only uses one pallet is a wine rack. This project provides a spot for wine glasses and a spot for your collection of wine.

Construct a Coffee Table

It may sound daunting, but creating a coffee table using pallets is easier than you think. Your handmade coffee table will even include a spot for magazines, books or anything else you hope to store in it. Adding casters will allow you to move your table around any room or between rooms.

It can also be used on a patio because it will be weather-proof.

Visit either of our stores here in the Twin Cities – in South Minneapolis or New Brighton – for $2 pallets.
