Sometimes, you just need a little extra storage in your house. If your kids need an extra place for their mittens, their gloves, or their school stuff, Twin Cities Habitat ReStore's Jan Hagerman has two great DIY projects for unique mudroom cabinets.
We started with a five drawer dresser that came into the ReStore in pretty sad shape. It was missing a drawer and the top was totally shot, but it was the perfect starter piece for this project.
We cut it down, added some trim, and put a back on it.
Then we added a six-panel door, painted it to match, and added crystal doorknobs for a little bit of interest and a place to hang hats and umbrellas.
Finally, we added a pad covered with fabric to match the decor.
This cubby is unusual, nobody else has one, and maybe your kids won't lose their mittens.
The easier cubby project starts with an above-the-microwave cabinet — available at the ReStore for about $25.
Take four wooden legs, screw them in, add a padded top, and you've got the bench.
If you want to hang things behind it, add the door, just like the first project.
