Let's face it—winter is part of life in Minnesota. Whether you enjoy or dread the snow and winter activities, there are plenty of ways to make the colder, darker months a bit warmer and cheerier. In this episode of [DIY Friday](https://restore.tchabitat.org/diyfriday) at the WCCO studio, New Brighton ReStore Manager Jan Hagerman shares her best thrifty ideas to prepare for winter.

## DIY Winter Solutions

Jan's ideas range from practical and cost-effective to fun and festive:

- Make your own heat packs and add scents like essential oils or cloves and cinnamon
- Put plastic over [windows](https://restore.tchabitat.org/blog/replacing-windows) to keep warm air in and cold air out
- Change your furnace filter
- Insulate your pipes
- Use insulated thermal curtains, or get new colorful curtains to spruce up your space

- Switch the direction of ceiling fans so warm air goes down instead of up
- Change the batteries in smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Brighten or switch up a room with a fresh coat of paint
