As a professional organizer, I've seen firsthand the challenges that clutter and disorganization can bring. Fortunately, there are countless creative ways to conquer chaos and improve your space with storage solutions. You can craft many of them yourself! DIY storage solutions not only help you save money but also allow you to tailor your organizational systems to your specific needs and preferences. In this blog, you’ll discover clever (and cost-effective) ways to create your own storage solutions with things you already have or items that are easy to find.
Wooden or plastic crates can be transformed into functional storage units. You can stack them to create a bookshelf or mount them on the wall for an attractive display. Add a coat of paint or stain to match your décor for a personalized touch.

Mason jars are a popular choice for DIY organizers, and they come in a variety of sizes. Great for storing small items, you can attach them to a wooden board or hang them individually to store office supplies, bathroom essentials, small toys, or crafting materials. Add labels to help you quickly locate what you need or add drawer pulls to the top for a stylish look.
Maximize your bedroom’s storage potential by using the space under your bed. Create your own under-bed bins using wooden drawers from a discarded dresser—just add wheels and drawer pulls or line the drawer with remnant materials. You can also elevate your bed using risers for even more space.

Transform your cluttered closet into an organized space by getting creative with what you have on hand or look for easy-to-find pieces. Use tension rods to add additional hanging space. Fill in lower open space by pushing in a small dresser with drawers. How about that vertical space? Use baskets and bins, or stack clothes using plastic dividers or office bookends.
Tension rods are a great solution for tight spaces. Use them inside cabinets to create extra shelves for baking sheets or pot lids. Or, use them in the laundry room for extra space to dry clothes. Get creative with the possibilities!

Make the most of your doors by adding over-the-door storage options. You can use hooks, pockets, or baskets for shoes, toiletries, or kitchen items. This is a simple and affordable way to reclaim space and reduce clutter.
Search for old furniture pieces that can be repurposed into unique storage solutions. An antique dresser can become a stylish kitchen island with added storage, while an old trunk can serve as a coffee table with hidden storage. A fresh coat of paint, new hardware, or clever modifications can turn these pieces into unique storage solutions. (Looking for furniture or paint? ReStore might have what you need!)

Pegboards are incredibly versatile for creating storage solutions in your kitchen, workshop, or craft room. Install a wood or plastic pegboard on your wall and use hooks and containers to store tools, utensils, or supplies. It’s a flexible system that can adapt to your changing needs.
Don’t forget the garage! DIY storage solutions can help you organize tools, sports equipment, and more. Inexpensive wire racks, shelves, and wall-mounted bins will help keep things in order. Use large hooks to take advantage of vertical space to store bikes, brooms, and tools. Storage bins can be used to store smaller items. Use one for each season and label them to keep organized.

Creating your own storage solutions not only helps you maintain a clutter-free and organized space—you can also express your creativity and style! These nine ideas provide a starting point for your DIY projects, but the possibilities are truly endless. Tailor your storage solutions to your unique needs and enjoy a more organized, visually appealing home or workspace. Remember that while DIY projects can be rewarding, it's important to prioritize safety and take your time to ensure your creations are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
